The great warrior ' Vikrant ', who retired from the Indian Navy, has completed the harbour trial in August last month with rebirth. Now the indigenous sophisticated INS Vikrant has been landed in the sea for tests. After completion of sea trials by the end of 2020, Vikrant will become part of the Naval family by 2021. INS Vikrant survival was rs 60 crore
In fact, India announced the retirement of its old British aircraft carrier INS Vikrant in 1989. It was purchased from britain in 1957. By then it was known as HMS Hercules. It was inducted into the Indian Navy in 1961 and retired on 31st January, 1997. Vikrant was placed in the ship museum but was removed in 2012. Thereafter, in April 2014, the Government decided to sell the vessel in scrap. The ship played a role in the naval siege of the then East Pakistan (Bangladesh) in the Indo-Pak War of 1971. Therefore, admiral Arun Prakash, the then chief of the Navy, advocated for converting this historic warship into a war museum instead of selling it in scrap so that ordinary Indians could know India's glorious war history through it. In spite of this, the ' Great Warrior ' was sold at the hands of private company IB Commercial Pvt. Ltd. for Rs. 60 crore through an auction.

It was decided to build another warship indigenously in the same name to keep the name of INS Vikrant alive. The construction of the Air Defence Ship (ADS) was to start at Cochin Shipyard from 1993 but plans for construction of ships were stopped indefinitely after the economic crisis of 1991. In 1999, the then defence minister George Fernandes approved the construction of 71 ADS by reviving the project. Thereafter, work on the design of the new Vikrant ship began and finally got formal government approval in January 2003. Meanwhile, in August 2006, admiral Arun Prakash, the then chief of naval staff, changed the designation of the vessel from Air Defence Ship (ADS) to indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC).
Vikrant name means 'daring'
Thereafter, construction of Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) INS Vikrant was started at Cochin Shipyard in Kochi from 28th February 2009. After completion of construction in two years, Vikrant was launched on August 12, 2013. After completion of the structural work, it was unloaded at sea on 10th June, 2015. Thereafter, the round of port testing began, which has been completed last month. The sea trials will run by the end of 2020 and thereafter INS Vikrant is planned to be inducted into the Naval Fleet by 2021. It is the first aircraft carrier to be built in India. The name Vikrant means 'courageous'. The motto of the ship is Jayem San Yudhi Speight: "I can beat those who fight against me".
Will provide anti-submarine warfare capability
During the construction of this modern aircraft carrier, the design has been changed from 37 thousand 500 tonnes to more than 40 thousand tonnes. Similarly, the length of the ship increased from 252 metres (827 feet) to 260 metres (850 ft). It is 60 metres (200 ft) wide. It has been designed to operate MiG-29 and other light combat aircraft. About thirty aircraft can be carried simultaneously, which will include about 25 'fixed-wing' fighter aircraft. The Kamov-31 airborne will fulfil the early warning role and provide anti-submarine warfare capability.
